Nordic Patent Institute

Nordic Patent Institute is an international institute to which Iceland, Denmark and Norway are party. This is a new option for PCT applications. The responsibilities of the Institute include acting as an international searching authority (ISA) for international patent applications. The Institute was established with the goal of maintaining technical knowledge within the Nordic countries and offering rapid, quality services for patent examinations at competitive prices.

The Institute was recognised at the conference of the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) in 2006 as an International Searching Authority responsible for novelty and patentability examinations for Icelanders, Danes and Norwegians. The Institute began operations on 1 January 2008.

PCT applications (international applications) submitted by Icelanders may select the Nordic Patent Institute as their International Searching Authority.

The Nordic Patent Institute, moreover, handles the examination of patents for companies and public entities.
