International conference – The Importance of Intellectual Property Rights

Over 160 delegates participated in the conference The Importance of Intellectual Property Rights which took place in Reykjavík on August 18. The conference was held to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Icelandic Patent Office. Speakers came from various sources, both Icelandic and foreign, and among them was Mr. Francis Gurry, Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization, WIPO.

Change in the tariff of fees for patents, trademarks and designs

Regulation amending Regulation no. 916/2001 on fees for patents, trademarks, designs, etc., as amended has been adopted by the Minister of Economic Affairs.

This regulation, which is placed under the authority of Act 17/1991 on patents(article 68), Act 45/1997 on trademarks(article 65), Act 46/2001 on the design(article 53) and Act 155/2002 on Collective Marks (article 9), will take effect on 1 April 2011.

New Director General at the Icelandic Patent Office

As from October 1, 2010 Ms. Borghildur Erlingsdóttir has been appointed Director General of the Icelandic Patent Office, for the next two years.

The former director, Ms. Ásta Valdimarsdóttir, has been appointed  Head of Operations in International Registries of Madrid and Lisbon Brands and Design Sector at WIPO in Geneva.

Nordic Patent Institute - New Management

Lone Hartung Nielsen has been appointed Director of Nordic Patent Institute from 1st February 2010. Lone is presently Director of Sales and Marketing at the Danish Patent and Trademark Office. Grétar Ingi Grétarsson, a former legal advisor at the Icelandic Patent Office, has been appointed Deputy Director.

The adoption of the London Agreement

The London Agreement entered into force on May 1, 2008, following the ratification and accession of the 13th EPC member state; France. The deposit of the instrument of accession was made by Iceland on August 31, 2004. The London Agreement applies only to European patents. In Iceland the claims of the European patent must be supplied in the national language, Icelandic, but other parts of the patent may be supplied in Icelandic or English.
