A new patent management system

11.6.2009

A new patent database has been implemented at the Icelandic Patent Office – ELÍS. The database was custom-made by Hafsteinn Þór Einarsson, B.S. in software engineering, based on free software. The functionality of the new database is greatly improved compared to the older one, which had served the institution for about two decades and was built on a Macintosh platform (Helix).

With increased automation, all handling of applications and patents will be much more secure. The Icelandic Patent Office regularly sends data to the European Patent Office in addition to retrieving data from there concerning European patent applications which apply to Iceland, and this data transfer will now become easier. The database will also open the possibility of electronic handling of applications, and a connection to the electronic document filing system of the institution becomes possible.

It will hopefully not be long before it will be possible to display public information from the database on the home page of the institution, and thus make it possible for customers to search the database themselves.
